How Does Grease Impact the Sanitary Sewer System?

Just like it forms blockages in your plumbing at home, improperly disposed of grease can also cause blockages in the sanitary sewer lines.  Built up grease will eventually begin to solidify and form large plugs which can be difficult and expensive to remove.  Small amounts of grease entering drains in a community can eventually become a problem which disrupts the plumbing of everyone in the neighborhood!  Really bad blockages can force grease and raw sewage out of manholes and across streets and parking lots.  Using hot water or soap to chase grease down a drain will only allow it to begin clumping and solidifying a little farther down the line. 

How Does the City Handle Grease Issues?

Through public education, grease interceptor inspections and preventative line maintenance.  To avoid grease-related problems in your plumbing, wipe out pots and pans before washing and throw the food waste away. Collected grease and cooking oil can be brought to the City’s Public Used Oil Collection Site at the corners of Plant and Victoria Streets available Monday - Friday from 7:30am - 3:30pm. You can even leave used motor oil and filters at the same site.
