The City Planning Board is comprised of 7 members appointed by the Commission. Currently there are no city limit residency restrictions to apply or serve on this board and members serve without compensation. The Planning Board reviews and recommends to the City Commission:

- Revisions to the City's Comprehensive Plan
- Amendments to the City's land use regulations and amendments to the zoning districts
- Amendments to the City's housing code
- Plans for the subdivision of land and the opening or extension of streets, alleys and rights of ways
- Proposals for new parks and places of recreation when requested by the City Commission
