- In 1979, the citizens approved by referendum an ordinance changing the terms of the City Commissioners. Beginning 1981, the annual terms began on the first Monday of June. Pursuant to the ordinance, Commissioners Meriwether and James Hoover's terms were extended to June 1981; Commissioner Ballard's term was extended to June, 1982; and the terms of the Commissioners elected in October, 1979 were extended to June, 1983.
