1. What is a cross connection?

A cross connection is a connection between a potable source of water and a non-potable system or source of water. The most common cross connection is a garden hose.

2. Is a cross connection a potential health hazard?

Yes. There are two ways that a potential health hazard could occur. One is if back pressure and back siphonage. Back pressure occurs when the non-potable source pressure exceeds the potable water pressure.

Back siphonage occurs when the supply line pressure falls below atmospheric pressure in each case the non-potable side forces a reversal of flow.

3. How is the City helping to eliminate cross connections?

The City is helping by:
1. having backflow prevention devices installed on all meters to our industrial and commercial water customers.
2. Public awareness and education
3. Yearly test on all backflow devices located at the water meters
4. Regulatory compliance

4. What can I do to help?

By working together we can keep our drinking water safe for our families and our City by following some simple steps. To assist in this effort:
1. Never submerge a hose in buckets, pools, tubs, or sinks
2. Do not use spray attachments with out a backflow prevention device
3. Install an approved backflow prevention device on all threaded faucets around your home
4. Install an approved backflow prevention device on your irrigation system
